PeriyarAbout Periyar: Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Thekkady around the Periyar Lake and is South India's most popular wildlife sanctuary. It covers an area of 777 sq kms out of which 360 sq kms is thick evergreen forest. It was declared a tiger reserve in 1978. Periyar lake is an artificial lake, formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river. It covers an area of 26 sq kms and adds to the beauty of the park. There are 2 watchtowers in the park at Edappalayam and Manakkavala. The park is home to tiger, leopard, elephant, flying squirrel, Sambar, bison, spotted deer, antelope, languor, etc. The estimates of elephant population is around 750 and tigers 35. Guided jungle walks are also available and depart early in the morning. For walks further into the park, guides can be arranged from the wildlife information center. Trekking can also be done inside the park. Elephant-back rides are available for wildlife viewing around the park. There are spice gardens nearby and tours are regularly organized.
